How to Pass MRCS Part 1 and MRCS Part 2 Examinations

Taking the MRCS Part 1 or MRCS Part 2 (member of the royal college of surgeons) examination is a stressful and busy time for junior doctors. With already busy schedules one must find the time to cover several books of comprehensive information in training for the MRCS Part 1 or MRCS Part 2 examination. 9 Tips for MRCS Part 1 and MRCS Part 2 training

  • Register for a MRCS Part 1, MRCS Part 2 or MRCS 1 & 2 classroom courses; it can assist tremendously by reviewing key specialties and preparing you for the exam format. Specifically search for MRCS lecture courses that offer smaller class sizes so you can interact with the lecture without feeling in intimidated.
  • Start studying for MRCS Part 1 and MRCS Part 2 as early as possible; there is far too much information to be covered in a week long cram session. Organise your time into priorities that have to be met in order to achieve the MRCS examination results you desire, then set realistic goals accordingly.
  • Utilise as many tools as possible. Practicing mock-exams, through MRCS Part 1 and MRCS Part 2 online courses, can give you a feel for exam conditions as well as direct your studies further when results are seen. Try and take the mock-exam as if it were the actual MRCS Part 1 and MRCS Part 2 examination, it will lead to more realistic results.
  • Use any spare time to do a few MRCS Part 1 and MRCS Part 2 practice questions. Those who have passed MRCS in the past have given the advice to Practice Practice Practice, be it MRCS lecture courses, online courses or studying on your own.
  • If your schedule is quite full, choose an MRCS online course. It allows for a large amount of flexibility as you can take MRCS practice tests, use practice questions and teaching notes at your leisure. Look for an online course that updates their information to the current syllabus regularly. This flexible tool can lead to success for both MRCS Part 1 and MRCS Part 2 examinations.
  • When the pressure level becomes too high and you find yourself incredibly stressed from MRCS Part 1 and MRCS Part 2 pressures, make sure to take a break. Part of an effective time management system includes scheduling time for relaxation. If you don’t plan for it, you won’t do it.
  • Make a MRCS plan for the coming week and set obtainable goals accordingly. Make sure that they can be worked into your schedule and finally, try and achieve the MRCS goals.
  • It is important on the eve of the intercollegiate MRCS Part 1 or MRCS Part 2 examination to take time to relax and do a small amount of review. You want to be fully rested and confident on the day of the actual examination.
  • Put long hours of hard MRCS work in early on in your studying schedule. You don’t want to come near the MRCS exam and realize that you have several more topics to learn. It is better to find yourself with less to do right before the MRCS Part 1 and MRCS Part 2 examination rather than too much in need of being crammed.

Guide to Passing the Intercollegiate MRCS Part 1 and MRCS Part 2 Examination

  • Check your eligibility before the MRCS Part 1 and MRCS Part 2 examinations. Part 1 of MRCS, the Applied Basic Sciences section, may be entered by any candidate who holds a primary medical degree acceptable to the four Royal Surgical Colleges. Meaning a degree from a medical school that is included on the World Health Organisations list. For part 2 of MRCS, candidates must have completed Basic Surgical Training (BST).
  • Select an MRCS Part 1 and MRCS Part 2 exam date that will function well with your schedule. MRCS training will take several months. Depending on your readiness level and schedule, you will want to choose a date for the MRCS exam 3-6 months away from the present. Once you have registered for a MRCS Part 1 or MRCS Part 2 examination it is time to begin scheduling your preparation!
  • Plan ahead! The best way to prepare for both the MRCS Part 1 and MRCS Part 2 exam is to make a structured MRCS study plan ahead of time. Use your syllabus to schedule study times for all areas it encompasses, once you have made a schedule, try and set small goals in order to complete your structured plan to achieve MRCS success.
  • Use all tools available to you! Try to join MRCS lecture courses where you will have an experienced lecture at your disposal. There are courses that focus on either MRCS Part 1 or MRCS Part 2 and courses that combine MRCS Parts 1 & 2. Or join a study group, here you can share and solve problems and gain support from each other gaining a sense of unity and confidence.
